Incidents & Hazards

Rudy the Bad Actor as Red-Shirt Guard RudyIncident ReportReduced to a heap of grey studio ash in under 4 seconds.

Rudy plays "Red-Shirt Guard Rudy." He steps out of an airlock to read a corporate memo, wanders into the filtering beam and is instantly reduced to a heap of grey studio ash.

His entire performance consisted of yelling 'Oh, non!' before a stagehand threw a bucket of heavy grey ash straight at the camera lens.

Notes from the Set

Director's Note“Rudy complained that the ash ruined his blonde pompadour. We told him it added dramatic grit.”

Trivia

  • The ATS suit had sharp sheet-metal edges inside. Rudy frequently got his trousers stuck, causing muffled screams mistaken for alien radio feedback.
  • Jennie’s ray gun laser effect was achieved by a stagehand holding a dirty green stained-glass panel over a high-powered spotlight.
  • A swarm of background extras playing automated candidate units tripped over the camera wire, destroying an expensive lens. Director Roy deducted it from Rudy's pay.
  • The script called for the Data Queen to wear a spacesuit, but she flatly refused to remove her laboratory coat, forcing writers to invent an atmospheric oxygen bubble overnight.
  • Rudy’s vaporization heap of ash was actually leftover charcoal from a weekend studio barbecue at Gaston Roy's house.
